San Diego-based Safety First Arms has created the Smart 2, a gun that is locked and unlocked using a PIN number, which can unlock the weapon in less than a second. [More]Sure it can. It does not mean in the dark, roused from sleep by the sounds of an intruder, fumbling frantically while your hands shake, your heart pounds and an unknown someone draws…closer. No way would I trust that. Like you said, it's a lot easier to charge my AR or pull a slide in the dark.
Watch the promo video and count the safety violations. IMHO, safety is not the Primary motivation...leftward flowing "compromise" is.
I assure you, Safety First Arms' founder is actually conservative, and our motivation is from innovation and to provide consumers with reliable high quality firearms capable of preventing family tragedy in any form, whether by perpetrator, distraught teen, or by accident.
The motivation of those fearful of such an innovation is a healthy fear of mandates from states like New Jersey, which we are strongly against, because they backfire to prevent innovations such as ours. Resistance also comes from bad designs of previous "smart gun" relying less reliable fingerprint readers or less practical RFID companion devices.
The SMART 2 should neither be mandated nor prevented from being sold. Let us prove reliability of our military grade, ruggedized firearms through third party labs and thorough testing. Then let the market decide.
The market for gun safes is huge. The SMART 2 is a better, more accessible, faster, safer, secure and flexible alternative to a gun safe or trigger lock. Those wanting to keep a loaded accessible gun nearby, and have absolutely no concerns about their children or teens may and will continue to keep a loaded accessible gun where they can.
"In the dark, under stress, roused from sleep" are all things people have to deal with a gun safe as well. The SMART 2 has a durable lighted keypad and with rehearsal, can be unlocked in under a second. It's a false dichotomy: a gun that's not ready (locked or inaccessible) or risky (loaded, unlocked and accessible). This is the one of the best solutions to bridge the gap.
Safety locks? You will pull the trigger with a lock on, and I'll pull the trigger. We'll see who wins.
My daily carry pistol is only in a gun safe when I am physically unable to carry it. At all other times my loaded and chambered sidearm is either on my hip (yes, even inside my home), or in a holster next to my bed where it is easily accessible to me should I need it, but still safe as the trigger is not exposed. No "fumbling" with gun safe locks here.
Tell you what, SF. Prove to me just how easy this gun is to use. Convince the Secret Service and police departments to carry it in daily use. If they deem it reliable under duress, I'll take a second glance at your product. Until then, I'll stick with my "dumb" sidearm, thanks.
