“As a Sheriff, I firmly back the Second Amendment,” says Abston ... “This money generated from the pistol permit goes to buy our uniforms, equipment, our firearms, our training, our ammunition to train and send people to the police academy. Once you take away that funding where’s the money going to come from?” [More]You need a firm back with a goddamn "but" that big.

Wow! How much do they charge for a permit? LOL!
"Once you take away that funding where’s the money going to come from?”
Gee, I don't know, Sheriff. How about . . . . . the same source as your other funding; i.e. the taxpayers who have been getting a free ride on the backs of law abiding gun owners?
I agree with one original commenter that permit fees seldom generate significant revenue. This is a smokescreen - unfortunately one which hoplophobes will find compelling.
To answer anon @ 4:06 PM, it varies county to county from a low of $20 (which wouldn't buy a single pair of uniform trousers) to a high of $125 according to the original article.
Sheriff David Abston, "See? We gotta infringe on your rights. We just gotta! How else am I gonna pay my deputies to harass you?"
Longbow-
You don't suppose this Oathbreaker has forgotten about using civil assent forfeiture as a means to 'enhance revenues', do you?
