Ask the Expert

It’s a myth that guns on campus will make us safer ... Janet P. Stamatel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Kentucky. [More]
Let's do a thought experiment, Janet. Readers here can join in:

You're in your office and you suddenly hear a series of loud bangs, possibly followed by terrified screaming and sounds of panicked people trying to escape. Then you hear more bangs, closer this time, and maybe some hysterical pleading or moans of agony. Whatever it is, it's coming your way, approaching your position. It will be upon you in a matter of several seconds.

What are you personally prepared to do about it? Because it doesn't look like running or hiding are options for you, at least not very effective ones...

His first thought must be hers: "the government should do something!!!"

Self reliant people are more useful to society than the nanny-state wannabies think they themselves are.
