We're the Only Ones Cutting Short Enough

The Louisiana law enforcement officer found guilty of manslaughter in the fatal shooting of a 6-year-old boy with autism has been sentenced to 40 years in prison. [More]
He "feared" the guy was going to back up?  It didn't actually happen?

I hear ex-LEOs get "special" treatment in the slammer - not from the administration but from the other inmates! I wonder if he'll get (read "live") to serve out his full sentence of 40 years without parole.

Also, David? Do you know why the legal beagles go to the trouble of assigning time for a 2nd (2ndary) offense and then have the two sentences served concurrently? Why bother? The 15 year sentence will be subsumed into the much longer 40 year (without parole) sentence. How will that be punishment for the attempted murder of the driver? To my mind, they ought to have the two terms served consecutively - lighter sentence first. That way they could "release" him at the end of the smaller term and then throw him back into gen pop for the 2nd (longer) term.

My *guess* is it would factor into parole hearings and eligibility, but I don't *know* that.
