Capture the Flag

A Jacksonville city inspector walked into a Cedar Hills Estate business to issue a warning citation over the display of military flags and employees said she insulted a customer who turned out to be a military veteran. [More]
Inigo is as puzzled by the mayor's use of "customers" as I am.

I've talked before about arrogant city workers who abuse what little power they have. I laughed when one I got into a heated exchange with (and won) ended up exposed.

The store owner's righteous defiance is what forced attention.

Anybody see what the original sin was?

And all that said, I see people are beating the hell out of the inspector on her Facebook page, where she also has a photo of her husband dying in a hospital bed. I'm not offering that as a mitigating excuse for unacceptable professsional conduct, but am offering a reminder: Sometimes it helps to keep in mind that we all bear our own burdens and sometimes what we don't see is behind what we do.

And that said, she sure does seem to do a lot of Facebook posting on what appear to be workdays and normal working hours...

I already went through several sections of Jacksonville code. There are restrictions on ground level signs and flags. There are restrictions on flags with commercial messages and logos. There are restrictions on signs and flags obstructing traffic or blocking road vision.

I can find NO restrictions on noncommercial flags of reasonable size on top of a building where they do not obstruct traffic or block traffic visibility

She made it up. And she had a supervisor to back up her fake claim.
