California Bar Killings

Twelve dead as trenchcoat-wearing gunman storms student night at country bar: Suspect kills himself after hurling smoke grenades onto dance floor and killing cop in California [More]
First order of information gathering business: The Google News link for Borderline Bar and Grill can be accessed throughout the day and beyond for updates and breaking information.

My first impressions:
  • The atrocity was committed in #1-with-gun-grabbers California. No "gun laws" will ever be considered enough, yet that's exactly what we're already hearing screams for.
  • "May issue" generally means "won't issue," and in any case, the standard application prohibits concealed carry in "a place having a primary purpose of dispensing alcoholic beverages for on-site consumption."
  • This is a country bar, like the Las Vegas killings were at a country event. Is it a mere coincidence that the "target demographic" has generally been predisposed toward a traditional American mindset?
  • Seconds counted. The police were three minutes away.
  • When we do get an ID on the perp, look for all his social media to go on lockdown beforehand or soon thereafter, meaning we will be dependent on what the "authorities" share with the DSM for all information.
UPDATES to follow:
  • .45 handgun... at least no "AR-15," but handguns were the original goal, so look for a return to the roots. I won't be surprised to see a push to reclassify all semiauto handguns as "assault weapons," and the gun-grabbers have already telegraphed what they want to do then.
  • Tattooed trenchcoat-wearing gunman ... Ian Long, 29
  • Coed.com helpfully (for Don Lemon) advises all he was "white," a courtesy that all too often seems unoffered in other cases.
  • Former Marine with PTSD who was said to live with his mother...
  • 5 Fast Facts
  • Six off-duty, unarmed police officers from various agencies were at the bar when the shooting began...
  • Another observation from looking at all the media profiles on the guy-- past practice says if he had been a "right wing extremist" we'd be having that rubbed in our faces by now.  That everything I've been able to find is silent on his motivaters makes me wonder, since I find it hard to believe someone doesn't know what they were.

The whole thing about "no handguns in a bar" is .. well, good sense. Folks get drunk and rowdy; nobody wants a drunk in a bar with a gun.

But they still happen. And the only guy with a gun isn't drunk; he's homicidal. What to do, what to do?

Seems to me that if you're going to have a "Gun Free Zone" it now makes sense to provide an armed guard.

I haven't been drinking in a bar for 20 years. I've never been much into the bar scene, but any "Gun Free Zone" is an obvious fail-point ... as this "incident" illustrates.

Some days I cringe to open my computer because I know there's going to be another "mass murder" report. And it's going to reflect on the Second Amendment .. which is bizarre when the Second Amendment is not active in private establishments.

You can't win. There are only variations on how you can lose.

Jerry: I have to disagree with your statement that "no handguns in a bar" makes sense because of drunks in a bar. I do not drink. I do however enter places that serve alcohol. I enjoy eating wings at Beef O'Brady's. Since I don't drink, how is that any different than me carrying at McDonald's?
Pizza Hut serves beer. Should carry be off limits there?
You can try to claim that carry should be off limits in a bar, but not in a restaurant, but that is difficult. How can a CCW holder know which is which? Texas 51 signs don't work, because some places put up the 51 sign, even when 51% of sales isn't from alcohol.
The only thing that makes sense is to prohibit drinking alcohol while carrying a weapon.

My ex father in law was in the Marines for 12 years- he is a hard core progressive. My nephew was in the Marines for 8 years is a hard core progressive.
I dated a female Marine for a year who was a pretty normal moderate. So 2/3rdfs of all Marines I know (small sample I know) are hard core progressive. Anyone else see anything like this? Johnny Gee.

From what has been published, he seems like an angry nut. Police were called to his mother's house several months ago, responding to an incident in which he apparently fired a gun. But the decision was made not to put him on a mental health "hold." Also, he was a military veteran who apparently had not enrolled in any mental health programs. At this point, he does not seem to have had a political "motivation" for his heinous, cowardly, dastardly act.
