A frequent cause of outliers is a mixture of two distributions, which may be two distinct sub-populations, or may indicate 'correct trial' versus 'measurement error'; this is modeled by a mixture model.
Two distinct sub-populations are the mentally healthy, and those suffering from the flaw in human brains which creates undeserved self-loathing. Religions are invented to rationalize the preexisting feelings of self-loathing. Government is such a religion, further supported by the political instincts inherited from the great apes. Anyone whose accepts self-destructive policy from self-loathers, perhaps because their empathy is stronger than their survival instinct, is also suffering from self-loathing.
