I always prefer a pump shotgun because the sound of it racking is potentially enough to keep from having to use deadly force. [More]To each his own, but I advise against that.

Yes, I strongly advise against that as well. With an empty chamber and in an uncocked state, a shotgun is merely an expensive club.
I have a Benellli M1, first class, and can put 72 00 pellets in the air before the first spent case hits the ground.
