Given the rarity of a gun trace having anything to do with solving a crime, why do so many people have their shorts in a bunch over "untraceable" guns?
Given the rarity of a trace, period.
It is not that the firearms are unserialized, but that a serial number is not recorded by some government entity. The serial number itself does not confer some talismanic magical properties to the firearm.
Stop recording the serial numbers, destroy the records of serial numbers and the lack of a serial number becomes a non-problem. After all, it is the inappropriate usage of the object, not the unique properties of the object such as a serial number that is the issue.
