Sources confirmed to Global News that Wortman shot RCMP Const. Heidi Stevenson in the chest before dragging her from her car and shooting her again. He stole her handgun, sources say. It’s not known whether he used the handgun on any of his victims.
And authorities say the guns that were "his" were "illegal"...

"the guns that were his were illegal" means only that he had no license for guns that may have been of legal type to own otherwise. On the other hand, an otherwise perfectly common rifle, shotgun, or pistol can be "illegal" for being (or not being) on an arbitrary government list, like they do in CA and MA.
At this point, we should simply assume the guns were otherwise legal; proceed to publish, email, and tweet on that assumption; and force the "authorities" to dispute it if they can. My guess is that they won't.
