Funny-- the DSM doesn't seem to think this is a story at all.
Here's the thing-- even if he dropped out or dropped dead, the same people bent on voting for him would vote for Kamala. Where this would throw things off could be necessitating a redo for the millions who have already voted -- anybody know if there's precedent on how that would be handled? I( can't see where it would be legal to just give the votes to the VP candidate "successor."

AFAIK, technically no one voted for Joe or Kamala. They voted for a slate of electors that may or may not be bound to vote for the Harris/Biden ;-) ticket when the Electoral College convenes depending on state law. How those electoral college votes would be handled in the event that a candidate was somehow no longer able to fill the office would likely also be subject to state law.
But it would surely generate one heck of a legal hairball in the process.
Ditto on the Electoral College argument. But for other offices you won't be that lucky. As Alan Korwin often advises:
"Do NOT vote early. It helps guarantee your vote will NOT count. Spreading the election over a month or more is practically a plot. It wipes out the original inspired plan. Between the bogus early date and the real constitutional election date, candidates die, get murdered, they are arrested, they withdraw, you learn they are lowdown sly lying sidewinding snakes worse than you knew, and worse. Your vote gets wasted."

If you thought voting for Joe was anything other than a vote for Harris, well you are dumb enough to vote Democrat.
