The moral case against abortion struggles mightily with the utilitarian case for it.
If a person, of any race, and no moral compunctions against it, chooses not to have unwanted children that they would only abuse spiritually and ultimately raise with no moral compunctions of their own, it’s a struggle not simply to default to the outlook of not interrupting your opponent when he is making a mistake.
My house is one of those where abortion rights and gun rights are frequent topics for conversation.
One story that was discussed in depth was about a state legislator who pointed out the absurdity of his state's laws covering the death of a fetus. His hypothetical example was of a pregnant woman crossing the street to meet her appointment at a "family planning" clinic with the intent of aborting her pregnancy. She is struck by a careless driver and as a result her fetus dies. The driver is charged with the death of a baby. Yet if woman had made it safely across the street, the medical personnel at the clinic would have intentionally killed that same fetus with no legal consequences.
He didn't think that made any sense, and neither did we.
