Sister of Slain Border Agent Murdered by Guns Linked to ATF Reacts to CBS News’ Interview with Agent

Tonight on the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH KATIE COURIC (6:30 PM ET), Kelly Willis, the sister of murdered U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, responds to John Dodson, the ATF agent who risked his job to speak with CBS News about the agency’s practice of letting guns “walk.” Investigative Correspondent Sharyl Attkisson uncovered “Fast and Furious,” a secret case in which the ATF allowed guns to be purchased in order to track them, build a big case, and take down a major Mexican drug cartel.  Two assault rifles the ATF let go as part of  this strategy were found nearly a year after purchased at the scene of Terry’s murder.

Agent Dodson spoke out in an exclusive interview that broadcast on the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH KATIE COURIC on March 3. When asked by Attkisson about what he would say to Terry’s family, Dodson said, “First of all, I'd tell them that I'm sorry.  Second of all, I'd tell them I've done everything that I can for them to get the truth.  After this, I don't know what else I can do.  But I hope they get it."

Tonight, Terry’s sister responds. Following are advance excerpts from tonight's broadcast.  MANDATORY CREDIT: THE CBS EVENING NEWS WITH KATIE COURIC.

Kelly Willis: “You know, within the first five minutes after that was finished airing, my whole family members, we all called each other just in tears that somebody, sorry I'm going to cry…that somebody would put their job on the line like that for my family to give us the information that we need. And that right there was the whole break in the case for us. Sometimes you can't believe everything you read but when someone actually puts the truth to it in person like that it shows us that all our thoughts and speculations are true.”

Sharyl Attkisson: “What have you been told officially about what happened to your brother, where the guns came from, what bullet killed him?”

Kelly: “Nothing. We have been told nothing.  Every time we have a question they can't answer it. Nothing.”

They had to be dragged in -- and you can prove that for yourself by following the way the story was finally forced into the public consciousness -- which naturally assured they would never, ever acknowledge those doing the prodding. It's hardly surprising to see that "tradition" continue.

They never weighed in until after Grassley started making noises. Guess what had to happen before he did.

No offense or disrespect is meant toward the outstanding and original work done by Sharyl Attkisson, but if you click on the "prove...yourself" link, you can see how much preceded the first CBS News report. If your exposure is limited to what the big boy media and the guys driving the weinermobile say, you'd never know any of that.

Stonewalled

We found that a lot of the background regarding this emerging controversy was anonymously posted by ATF insiders on the blogs of gun rights activists Mike Vanderboegh of Sipsey Street Irregulars and David Codrea of Examiner.com. So my producer and I contacted Vanderboegh and Codrea, who were in direct contact with some of the principal players. [More]

Points of order: No ATF insider ever posted here or at Sipsey. All information received was vetted and posted by Mike and me -- we don't turn over the keys to the car. I don't know where she got that idea. Also, yes, she posted a request on CUATF, but I passed along her request along with Vanderboegh's recommendation in order to encourage the decision to speak with her.

Some day, all the emails will come out.

The last time I brought up the subject of recognition, a toxic comment poster accused me of whining. Pretty snottily, too.

No, what I'm doing is trying to set the record straight, correct an injustice and give credit where due.  If the "critic" had been paying attention, he'd know that's something I do every day, with and for all kinds of people and subjects. If anyone thinks I can't do the same for myself and Mike on occasions when I see the truth being further buried -- on my own blog and when no one else will -- then that's just too damn bad.

A Fast and Furious Getaway for Holder?

The bottom line: By the time Holder testified under oath he’d only learned about things weeks before, hundreds of reports had been filed. Vanderboegh and I had our sources talking with Senate staffers by mid-January. The Mexican press had begun reporting on “Gunwalker” by late January. Sharyl Attkisson had begun her series of reports for CBS News featuring whistleblower John Dodson by the third week in February. Also damning for Holder are memos from National Drug Intelligence Center Director Michael Walther, showing the attorney general was apprised of Fast and Furious as early as July, 2010, and a letter sent by Senator Chuck Grassley to then-ATF Acting Director Kenneth Melson, dated January 31, 2011 that copied Holder. Look, brouhaha over phrasing aside, it's great to see the story recognized, and nobody deserves an award for "video investigative reporting" more. Congratulations are in order to Sharyl Attkisson for an outstanding job, for convincing the brass to let her do it, and especially for making so many aware of this important story and then staying with it.
