So Much for Freedom of Expression

A local government agency is refusing to hire smokers. [More]
I guess I shouldn't give a damn about the "rights" of anyone who wants to work as a tax collector, but I see several issues here, including some little nazi deciding gun ownership is a disqualifying health risk.

I'm surprised no one has tried that yet, actually.

We're the Only Ones Chiefly Responsible for Putting Guns Back on the Street Enough

The chief of the Morningside Police Department in Prince George's County was fired this morning following media reports that he was under investigation for selling two weapons...

They said authorities were investigating a complaint that Eichelberger sold two weapons -- a handgun and a shotgun -- out of the trunk of his police car for $600. Authorities were investigating whether the alleged sales violated state gun sales laws. [More]
So did he?

Per Morningside ordinance:
Section 9-106.

Discharging or possessing firearms or other dangerous weapons

No person other than an officer in line of duty, or a person in the necessary defense of life or property, shall discharge any firearm of any kind, or any air rifle, within the limits of the Town. No person, other than a law enforcement officer, shall have in his or her possession while on the streets of the Town, any revolver, pistol, blackjack, brass knuckles, or other dangerous weapon except guns or archery equipment for game hunting or target practice which shall be no ammunition in either the barrel or magazine or arrows nocked.
Well, I don't see where it says the guns were loaded, but selling out of a trunk would indicate "possession while on the streets of the Town." But that's not the chief's rap.

And perhaps there's another "out" for the chief under state law. Per NRA-ILA's "Firearms Laws for Maryland":
Maryland does not regulate the sale of rifles or shotguns and no permit is required to purchase a rifle or shotgun.

Maryland does regulate the sale, transfer, rent and possession of regulated firearms, which consist of handguns and assault weapons. A person who is not a regulated firearms dealer may not sell, rent, transfer, or purchase any regulated firearm without going through a regulated firearms dealer. Alternatively, the prospective seller/transferor and prospective buyer/transferee may complete the transaction through a designated law enforcement agency.
Well there you have it--it seems the Chief "Only One" designated himself.

Now hold the dang phone--haven't we already established the shooter was compliant with all protocols...?

Besides, I'm sure there's something in the "Only Ones" handbook about dragging a wounded man over the ground--I mean, we've already established--more than once--that their special powers and abilities make their on-scene medical judgment the overriding authoritah in such matters...

We're the Only Ones Disadvantaged Enough

I think that letter writer believes police officers should not handle combat-type incidents. Maybe he just doesn’t think police should have more of an advantage than the suspects. [More]
Yeah, that's pretty much it, Don Dodson. If you think you and yours are the "Only Ones" who should have suppressors and/or firearms of military utility, have I got a Bill of Rights for you.

Don't you people swear oaths in Lompoc?

This is a response to a letter we discussed last week. As with that one, please go on over and spread enlightenment.

And, oh, look--here's an authoritah-worshiper who's holding a barbecue. Looks like she could use an education, too.

These are good opportunities to get a point of view in front of a readership that ordinarily doesn't discuss such things. I hope many of you take advantage of this opportunity.

Will Sotomayor Recuse Herself from Chicago Gun Case?

There's a meme wending its way around internet forums and the like that she'll recuse herself, since she already ruled at the circuit court level that the Second Amendment does not restrict the power of states to infringe on the right to keep and bear arms. Some seem to be under the impression that she ruled on McDonald, which she did not (she ruled on Maloney v. Rice), and because of that, the prospect of overruling herself will present a judicial ethics conflict. [More]
Today's Gun Rights Examiner column does not place great stock in Ms. Sotomayor's judicial ethics.

The Second Front

In the second major front in the war over gun rights that has developed in just days, a lawsuit has been filed against U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder seeking a court order that the federal government stay out of the way of Montana's management of its own firearms. [More]

Boy Repels Burglars from Home with Shotgun

You'll find no shortage of hoplophobes who--unable to rid our homes of guns--seek to have them rendered useless under the guise of "safe storage laws." We even find this presumption coming from some on "our side," including in Josh's home state. [More]
Today's Gun Rights Examiner column looks at another case where following the advice of the so-called "experts" could have resulted in a very different outcome.

We're the Only Ones Puzzled Enough

A rash of 30 armed robberies on the west side of Warren has business owners worried and the police scratching their heads. ...This week, the robbers hit a bar and demanded the people inside to get on the floor and give them all of their money and jewelry. [More]
No puzzlement is warranted. Everybody sees the problem here, don't you? That's right, it wasn't a cop bar. Only an "Only One" would be scratching their head over that.

Boy Shooting Gator Shows Value of Teaching Kids about Guns

Naturally, the hand-wringing hoplophobes, who preach ignorance and avoidance rather than education and training, have nothing to say. If they weigh in at all, we'll probably get a grudging "They were lucky." And then the focus of the critique will be on using Fox News as a source. [More]

This Day in History, October 3

The inclosed recommendation in favor of Capt. Charles Porterfield, at present attached to the 11th Virginia Regiment, was handed to me by the Gentlemen who subscribe it, with a desire that I would and request your interest for the Commission of Lieutenant Colonel or Major of the New Regiment of Artillery if the places are not already disposed of. I cannot undertake to recommend Capt. Porterfield upon my own particular knowledge, but he is universally esteemed by his acquaintances in the Army, as an Officer of very extraordinary Merit. He also, I am informed, has made the Military Branches of the Mathematics his particular Study. This Gentleman entered very early into the Service of his Country, he accompanied Genl. Arnold in his expedition to Quebec, at the Storm of which under General Montgomery, he was made prisoner.

[Note:Porterfield became brigade major to Woodford's brigade in July, 1778; resigned in July, 1779, to become lieutenant colonel of a Virginia State regiment; mortally wounded at Camden, S. C, in August, 1780; died in October of that year.] [More]

We're #1

...with a bullet. [More]

Welcome to the WoGroll. Clever blog name for list placement--you've got top spot with those of us who do things alphanumerically.

Hey, if anybody has me on their blogroll and don't see it reciprocated here, give me a holler.

I try my best to return the favor, but stuff slips by.

I remember when I was first starting out WarOnGuns, and put a bunch of "established" gun bloggers on my list who, it turned out, would not give me the time of day. I thought that was pretty snotty and promised myself I would never be like that.

Like it or Not?

Edmund Cooper says:

"...pulled over...tried to intervene..."

Better that one cooperates with the police when one is the object of their undivided attention. Like it or not, they are in charge on the street.

Police are highly emotional and have predictable responses. Not smart to make them feel threatened. [More]
This is a comment posted to a GRE column from the other day.

I think Mr. Cooper's observations raise some debatable points.

On the one hand, I can't argue with him. We've seen those "predictable responses" happen time and again.

On the other hand, with outrages that seem to be increasing to a breaking point, I question that this will always be the "smart" option...

Feel free to continue the in-progress discussion.
