John Benjamin Thornton is charged with using interstate commerce communications to send a threat to injure another person. The rambling texts allegedly from Thornton provided as evidence in a criminal complaint include statements that he was "taking leadership of revolutionary Army called the the [sic] 3%ers," an apparent reference to the anti-government Three Percenters group. According to the complaint, Thornton, calling himself a "revolutionary war general," texted: "5 stars after I execute Joe Biden for Treason." [More]

When trying to curb the worst of militias, law enforcement — from local beat cops to politicians passing new laws — inevitably run into questions of constitutional rights (the right to assemble, the right to bear arms) while also trying to keep communities safe. How do they know whom to go after, when to go after them, and how to stop them? [More]

"I also think it’s important that we talk about the American flag, which is a symbol of lots of hate as well, and I’ve really been appreciative of Black Lives Matter members who’ve said, yes the Confederate Flag is a terrible symbol of a particular historical moment, but the American flag is also a terrible symbol of our particular moment ... I appreciate the Confederate flag burning, I think it’s a power symbol, and it’s really amazing to be alive watching people burn it down, and I want to question, too, are we saying then that the American flag is a symbol that we are standing by? It’s not a symbol I stand by.” [More]
