How Free is Your State?

A new study out last week raised an intriguing question: How free is your state?

With state lawmakers in Ohio considering tougher seat-belt enforcement for civilians and shorter prison stays for criminals as two ways to balance the $54 billion, two-year state budget, the question seems both relevant and timely. [More]
The study is here. I don't know if co-author William P. Ruger is related to the gunmaker, but do note favorably that they factor in "gun control" as a measurement criteria.

I do differ with their weighting, though:
Gun control is worth just under a seventh of the full Paternalism concept.
Sorry, guys. It's worth more than that.

Note that where the state government are starved for money, there tends to be more freedom. There's a important lesson here.

I noted that a lot of commenters were insulted that anyone would think heavy regulation, restriction, and punishment for what should be personal decisions was considered an affront to freedom.

They evidently think that the absence of a boot on their necks means they aren't loved anymore. Oh boo fuckin' hoo.

i take issue with their methodology and i'm not feeling their excuses for leaving out abortion and the death penalty. how free are you when the state can murder you or exert control over your body?
