None of those three types of laws address the role of the local black market in firearms and ammunition. Inherent in the black market trade is that there are no ID checks, licenses, or records of transactions. While it may be interesting to compare the effects of the laws between the states, without the black market information it is difficult to differentiate between coincidence, correlation and causality. In other words, this report contains bad science.

However, in the three states that require some type of government issues license or permit to purchase ammunition, online sales of ammunition is not allowed. This means that the consumer has less choice and availability of ammunition, and typically pays more for ammunition than consumers in states that do not prohibit online sales of ammunition. The consumer may telephone local vendors regarding product availability and price, but then must travel to the vendor to show the government issued identification and purchase the ammunition. Online sales of ammunition delivered to your door allows the consumer wider product choice and price comparison among vendors nationwide. Both local and online sales supplied ammunition can then be offered directly to the black market or acquired through theft.

The medical journal, Lancet, is considered one of the poorest in the health care professions. The journal does NOT have rigorous vetting of the science behind any published study. When I attended the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Lancet was one of three journals that were on the list of resources that could NOT be used to support studies.

The fact that Lancet is the platform for this study is telling.

And once again, who gives a shit about reducing “gun deaths” if other types of aggressive death rise to more than compensate? Just another shell game that counts all the costs of guns while pretending that the benefits of guns don’t exist.
