Marijuana User Can Keep Gun Permit

A Washington County judge ruled that a Beaverton man can hold a concealed handgun permit despite being a medical marijuana user.

This ruling can't make NRA management very happy. After all, one of their talking points attacking George Soros is that:
Soros has given many millions of dollars to finance pro-marijuana initiative campaigns. He has been called "the Daddy Warbucks of drug legalization," by former Democratic Cabinet Member Joseph Califano.

Any government strong enough to go after drug users is strong enough to go after gun owners. I've never understood the affinity of "conservatives" to support prohibition.

Not sure we can fault the sheriff on this. He has the law he must follow, and technically he is inside it. If the courts relieve him of responsibility in a specific case, so be it. I bet he doesn't appeal.

As for prohibitions and supposed conservatives, remember, under our system, a political conservative must by definition be a social liberal and leave others the Hell alone, unless his rights are impinged. A social conservative, on the other hand, must, by definition, be a political liberal. Otherwise there is no way they can justify infringing the private choices of others absent the impingement of their own rights. As we know social conservatives are always trying to truncate the rights of others and tell them how to live even though their personal rights and proclivities may be unaffected.

That is a job better left to one's preacher, a person that may attempt to guide another in his idea of morality and according to the tenets of his religion, but who has not the power to make it law.

Under our constitution one cannot be a social conservative and a political conservative, even if one's views of morality are traditionally conservative, with but one exception. One may be a political conservative and believe the constitution means what it says, and be a social conservative in his private life. Once he extends his private beliefs as a template as to how others should live and tries to legislate that it be so, he has become a political liberal. Which means he does not believe in the Constitution of these United States of America.

The lone example of possible political conservatism and social conservatism existing unhypocritically in the same corpus, is if the most pressure he applies to others to accept his morality is by example and persuasion, rather than force or law.
