Texas Democrat Gun Owners Caucus

Amendment II Democrats is organizing the first-ever meeting of the new Gun Owners Caucus of the Texas Democratic Party at the upcoming 2008 State Convention in Austin, TX next month. If you are a delegate, alternate, or guest to the Texas convention, you are welcome to attend. Here are the details:

Friday, June 6, 2008 at 9:00am
Austin Convention Center
Level 3, Room 8B
500 E. Cesar Chavez Street
Austin, TX 78701
We've had extensive discussion on and with these folks before--on several occasions.

There are many issues I could raise and ask if they've taken a stance (and if not, why not?), when and what was it on timely and vital subjects like BATFU, Red's, Olofson, Cavalry Arms, etc., stuff that I focus on every day and certainly ought to merit comment from a gun rights group. But I believe there is a more clear and unequivocal demarkation line they could stand behind.

Fellas, you shouldn't need to wait until the June caucus because the candidates' positions are established, clear and not subject to credible change.

Who are you backing for president?

David's concerns are well noted - there are simply too many current RKBA issues to do them justice in a response to a blog post.

So instead, I want to put forth a bold proposition - No Safe Haven.

We already know that it's difficult for a Republican who is anti-RKBA to make any headway in his or her party on a national level. With the recent successes of pro-RKBA Democrats such as Jon Tester, Jim Webb, Bob Casey, etc., I am starting to have a glimmer of hope that the Constitutional amnesia that many of my fellow Democrats have suffered from since 1968 may be in danger of being cured.

Regardless of whether Obama or Clinton winds up as the nominee, any new gun-control legislation they wish to enact still has to go through Congress, which will probably remain in Democratic control for at least the next two years - and if this new crop of pro-RKBA Democrats holds their ground and stonewalls bills that ban semi-automatics or place .50-caliber rifles under NFA restrictions, this could be very good news for us, indeed.

I believe a previous posted on War on Guns opined that Amendment II Democrats wants to "have their cake and eat it too." That may be true. And maybe I'm crazy for thinking it could happen. But it has to start somewhere. If you want the Bradys, the VPC, and Third Way to find No Safe Haven among either the Democrats or the Republicans, it has to start somewhere.

Oddly enough John McCain still got the nod to run as the Republican nominee for President, or do you consider him to be pro-RKBA?
