Think "Authorized Journalist" Sam Wood of "The Poor Man's Newspaper" could have packed any more PSH into his "straight" (no editorializing or bias here, honest!) "news" story?
I would like to address the "idiot proof" slander though, or at least the motivation behind it, as if reliability and simplicity of tool use is a bad thing.
It's a squeeze play. Because while Sam and his fellow travelers are working one side of the street decrying "idiot proof" guns, their cohorts in citizen disarmament are working the other demanding them:

But it seems I read somewhere that anyone who thinks he's come up with a fool-proof device has underestimated the ingenuity of fools.

Long violent criminal record, I bet. Let out early several times despite probation and parole violations, I bet.
Guns are supposed to be dangerous and deadly. Most of hem DO have their origins in military designs. People aren't supposed to be dangerous, except in self-defense. THAT'S what needs fixing.
In the southwest, a bank robber JUMPED THROUGH a teller window, at the same time shooting a pregnant bank employee once in the abdomen (a dumb_ss with finger on trigger, or a malicious killer?). She lost her twins. The world is designed for the advantage of the criminal. The bank has been robbed 8 times in 6 years, and STILL wasn't secure.
Simple, functional guns give us a chance. A simple, functional correctional system would help.

Maybe the Marble PD should trade their M4 Carbines for SKS fixed magazine rifles. At least they wouldn't insert the magazine in backwards. Just a simple notation engraved in the stock to explain that it should be loaded with the "pointy end forward" would at least give most of them a carbine that they could actually fire...

WEll, David, the SKS is as nearly idiot proof as a gun can be made.
It is impossible to assemble it incorrectly, if you get it together, it works. Period.
The gun itself is idiot proof, its use is not, much like anything damn thing else you can name, from eggbeaters to pizza cutters.
Obviously, as you pointed out, the newspaper wasn't idiot proof.
