To Defend the Homeland

Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Monday ordered his top department leaders to conduct a broad review to determine whether the military, National Guard and Reserve can adequately deal with domestic disasters and whether they have the training and equipment to defend the homeland.
Because God forbid what is necessary for the security of a free state be considered.

I've expressed concerns before over the military crossing the line into domestic operations. I've been accused of being paranoid about this.

Perhaps. I don't feel paranoid, but then, do crazy people know they're nuts?

The alternative may be those who aren't concerned are overly trusting. I won't presume to break things down further into why that may be.

No, you're quite sane. This is why such was made illegal here. The military breaks things and kills people-they are not designed to do police work here. And they will end up being used for "assisting law enforcement". Standing armies are always dangerous to liberty, any student of history knows this, there are no exceptions. Domestic disasters and police work are to be done by civilians.

Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they're not after me.

sociopaths can't really recognize that they're sociopaths.

except, then we go and elect them, and let them appoint other sociopaths to work under them.

I don't really think this is as much about using the military in the U.S. as it is about laying the foundations for Obama/Emmanuel's civilian service idea and his domestic security force. Look at the facts - Obama is keeping Gates on for at least a year and needs some sort of statistics to back up the "need" for ideas like these.

That said, I too worry about seeing the Armed Forces used as law enforcement. I've seen it in one place once and it caused a much stronger reaction than I thought. I was in Mexico driving to Puerto Nuevo for some lobster with my girlfriend and was surprised to see the no kidding actual army at the toll plazas on the toll road. The thought that they could and would be used against me was very disturbing and I was more thankful than ever to live in the U.S.

Don't worry, crazy people never question their own sanity.

I am military and I'm worried about this and so are a lot of other people in the SF community. I would truly like to think that after being deployed to Iraq a lot of guys who have been there would not like to see any of that shit happening here on homesoil, and they know there would be people fighting including military folks themselves. You would see a lot of guys get out and do what's right. I know that I would carry a copy of the Constitution with me and would stick it in the face of every soldier who came up to me and would show him this is what he swore to defend. Your allegiance is to that piece of paper and this country, not who sits in that seat and in the senate and congress. Only one cup of coffee this morning so far (but it was a big cup).
