Its always amazed me how many AZ gun owners have never heard of the AZCDL. They have done legal wonders for gun rights in this state, and are poised to do more than ever this year, but they desperately need arizonans help to do so.
The State senate has a number of bills that have not yet been scheduled for committee, and are unlikely to be scheduled, unless letters are written, and quickly. The link David posted in the examiner comumn explains more than i can here, but i do hope that readers of this blog see this as what it is, to take what is oft repeated on these pages, "Our rights are being taken", and turn into Us, taking back and further protecting those rights. Thats what AZCDL does, every year.
Lest you think this is a futile attempt, that no one in the legislature would listen to a group of "Gun Nuts" and do the right thing, i think you are mistaken.
Last year this group sponsored and lobbied for much of the same legislation, and was successful in getting 5 great bills passed through the state legislature, all of which were vetoed by Governor Janet Napolitano.
In all, she vetoed 5 rights bills that were passed and supported in the legislature.
HB 2389 – Restored Vehicle carry.
HB 2626 – Restored open carry.
HB 2629 – Permitted less than lethal "defensive display."
HB 2630 – Reduced the penalty for carrying concealed without a permit for those not involved in a crime.
SB 1106 – Allowed for an alternative lifetime CCW permit.
After the elections this past year, the state seemed to go the opposite of the nation, in that it ellected a near supermajority of republicans, but of course, old Napoliveto was still a contention. After president Obama named her his candidate for homeland security chief, however, things look very different, as her successor, Secretary of State Jan Brewer, is a conservative republican
To repeat, we have a strong republican majority in both the senate and the house, and a conservative republican governor, This might not be ideal for all things, but it bodes very well for gun rights, and is an increddible opportunity.
