We're the Only Ones Catty Enough

A Provincetown police officer shot a severely injured cat early Monday morning to relieve its suffering, according to Provincetown police Chief Jeff Jaran.

But questions about the number of times the handgun was fired — four — were raised on a local blog... [More]
An act of mercy, "Only Ones"-style. Hey, it could have been worse. And at least this time it wasn't a dog.

I've noticed that cats have a tendency to writhe and twitch, even when shot in the head. This can fool you into shooting it repeatedly.

I suppose nobody considered having it euthanized at a shelter or veterinary clinic?

It would have been more dignified to put the animal out of its misery onsite--I could have understood that much better, even the idea that it may have required multiple shots. (Last stat I heard, nationwide hit potential for cops was 25%...who knows?)

But since the cat's misery was considered less important than relocating it to another site, why not some place that could do it with a little more dignity?

once he shot it the first time, it became his. so: "it's my damn cat, and i'll shoot it three times if i want to."

animals are property. they don't have rights.

I haven't read the story, but have been in the situation. It is incumbent upon us to relieve the suffering if a dumb animal is so injured that only pain and death await it. Unlike people, one cannot imbue hope or understanding in an animal. All they know is they hurt.
