'There is often an unrealistic public expectation that officers and staff will put themselves at risk to protect the public.' [More]Not from me there isn't.
Nor, would it appear, from "them."
Hey Brits--here's your green light to get all the guns you want. If anyone objects, just create a risk for them.
Disgusting.

No, I think they should be exposed to all kinds of ridiculous demands from the public. That's what happens absent any pricing information, because the service has been monopolized by government. It's a natural phenomenon that is the result of the unavoidable laws of economics. (And I don't mean "laws" as the sort discussed in Parliament.)
How about zero GBP for your services, public servants? Would that be better? What the public servants should do is stop characterizing the people's expectations as "unrealistic". The people have absolutely no idea what the service is worth, because they don't have to pay out-of-pocket for each instance when the service is rendered, and couldn't possibly know, through direct experience, how much more expense each additional demand creates.
Masochist-economists, the lot of them.
It would seem clear that, all too often, the cost is life itself, even if they don't value their liberty.
I just keep thanking God that we dont' get all the "protection" and government we pay for!
David,
I await your further comment after reading this.
