Militias seek official sanction as ‘state defense forces’ [More]
Huh. I could swear that's not the first time I've heard someone suggest that they already are or something...

"In Virginia, the General Assembly launched an investigation of its state defense force in 1990 after hearing that a brigade was saving up to purchase a tank and some units were practicing drug raids."
Not highly publicized around here. I guess it was embarrassing to have part-timers be more gung-ho than the Only Ones.
These guys sound TOO interested in being of use to the State(capital S intentional). Substitute "gun" for "drug" for a clear idea.
There's enough of us good ol' unorganized militia to help out if a general call goes out. I've met people in non-gun-related organizations who are ready to be Lord High Everything Else.

we're trying that in NH...

part of the deal is access to defense surplus depots at state prices (pennies on the dollar)

probably not any armor, and definitely not guns, but trucks, hmmwv's, small boats, ect.

I know part of the plan here is to take over the SAR role from fish and game and the state police. neither wants the job, and they don't get any funding for it. and we'll be self-funded, equipped, and supplied and be commanded by the governor.

it's an easy sell to the legislature.
