I always thought that this argument was hogwash. [More]As opposed to arguments that are unimaginative and cowardly? Or those of a subversive who knows what he's doing?
The ignorance-based arrogance, if that's what it is, is a two-edged sword.
On the one hand, it's to our advantage in a basic Sun-Tzu kind'a way--that is, if he truly doesn't know those he would make his enemy.
On the other hand, if that fear he ridicules and disparages ever loses its restraining power, that will make things a whole lot more dangerous for everyone, because people who don't fear an "or else" take risks they otherwise would not.

Where does one begin tearing this apart? He's so ignorant on so many facets it's appalling he even professes to know what the topic is.
And to use the Red Dawn movie as a point of 'reality' for an 'insurgency' shows how far he is from understanding even the basic premise of the question.
I think it was a carny who said, "You can fool some of the people all time..." Exemplified here, IMO. Not sure I want to make an SN to sign in to Huffpo, so won't waste time answering this fool.

As I recall, the kids in Red Dawn all got killed, or lit out for the safe zone. The NVA and to a lesser extent the Viet-Cong, and the Taliban would put paid to that technology routine. How come we're still there, fighting these low tech warriors? Because we haven't decisively defeated them, egghead. University professors. The status quo of laxatives.
