Interview with Dr. Adam Goldstein on assessment of competency for concealed-weapons permits and physicians' roles in reducing gun violence. [Listen]
First of all, who requires this? Would this be the result of some kind of court order?
He says there were no standards so he basically made them up as he went along. What are his credentials and what are the peer-reviewed authorities and processes that validates decisions? What recourse does someone who is denied have, and what liability does the doctor have if he nixes a permit and the patient becomes a victim?
This is just so incredibly dangerous with making physicians de facto deputized law enforcement agents. We've already seen disincentives to get something as basic as grief counseling.
If your doctor presumes to be an authority on dispensing gun advice, demand to know his qualifications.

If they were really SERIOUS about reducing homicides and gunshot injuries: we know where most of these occur, and the general characteristics of the perpetrators (urban gang members) and we also know most of these people are ineligible to own firearms because of previous felonies or youth. Does this not suggest an approach to reducing the magnitude of the problem? Instead, the Dems focus on feel-good measures that will have no impact whatsoever. Pardon me for my cynicism, but this suggests to me they are not serious about solving the problem, but rather in pursuing an action item on an ideological agenda. In addition, it seems they simply don't care about urban youth...
What the hell is the deal with the gun free zones for healthcare settings?
If he thinks his future permit screening is so good that he can weed out whackjobs, perhaps he needs to learn how to be more comfortable around those he signed off on!
