I was issued 4 different M16's during my time in the military, and every one would fire if you slapped the stock. We were told about it in basic, on our first day of weapons training. apparently his trainers forgot to mention it

The worn out POS M16'*s we used for annual qual would do that, but my regular issue rifle didn't. Probably had something to do with the fact that my fricking rifle got regular maintenance.

(* Yeah, I'm old enough that I really did have the original M16. Not even the A1. I've heard from folks using the modern versions of the platform that they aren't -- usually! -- so prone to bump fire.)
