What they can't (or won't) see is that this has little or nothing to do with crime prevention. It's possible to clean up old messes sometimes, but prevention involves an alert potential victim with the ability and willingness to defend him/herself. Subsequent crime is best prevented by elimination of the criminal from the gene pool, or creating a serious incentive for him/her not to commit aggression in the future.
The current criminal "injustice" system most certainly does neither one most of the time. The actual criminals who are incarcerated are more apt to continue criminal behavior than ever.
The actual non-criminals swept into the cesspool may choose a life of crime afterwards, either by volition or in despair, or simply spend the rest of their miserable life in poverty and depression. I know several of the latter... And THAT's criminal.
