Stewards of the Environment

This is malicious. This is the act of arrogant, abusive official bullies, confident -- based on years of getting away with it -- that they can intimidate and destroy with impunity.

And, of course, if you or I had done this without special permits and environmental impact statements, we'd be looking at years in the federal slammer.

I wonder if these gang members will ever come to wish they had treated citizens differently.

The Forest Service is completely dysfunctional. It has been for years. It has morphed from an agency that paid it's own way through 'multiple use' management (I call it 'stewardship') into a recreation and fire fighting agency that burns through it's fire budget half way through the season. To the political hacks that run the Forest Service, resource extraction is a dirty term. They'd rather see it all burn up. (Note the condition of the woods in the article's photos. They're ripe for a conflagration.)

I hate to sound so glum about it, but as long as it's a federal agency run by politicians in Washington D.C. who are elected by clueless people in big cities, nothing will change. That's just reality. And it's a shame.
