Constitution-Free Zones

You know, Iowa courthouses... [More]

"Only Ones" exempted of course...

And before anyone starts arguing for necessary "gun-free zones" and bans, there's a little truism they're going to need to get around.

Not sure that truism has to be gotten around. Courthouses collect and concentrate people who can’t be trusted with guns and don’t yet have custodians.

"Touted by supporters as a sweeping victory for Second Amendment rights, the bill allows concealed weapons to be carried into and around the Iowa Capitol by anyone with a gun permit. It also includes a paragraph that says anyone adversely effected by a local "ordinance, measure, enactment, rule, resolution, motion or policy" may sue for damages if their gun rights are usurped. That appears to be contrary to a 2003 opinion from the attorney general that Iowa cities and counties may pass weapons restrictions for the property they own."

Gee... I am not a lawyer, but it would appear that a bit of recent preemption legislation signed by the Governor trumps a decade-old opinion by the Attorney General. Details of laws matter.

Another gun free zone. That always works well...
