Philosophical masturbation. In “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance,” the author desribes suffering a nervous breakdown due to his inability to resolve inconsistencies as to where “quality” fits in the cosmic scheme of things. Eventually he discovers that if he presumes that “quality” is the basic stuff of the universe, all these inconsistencies fall out. This is because axioms override everything else by design, and what inconsistencies remain are simply pushed onto other components of the cosmos not currently in his attention-set. This article looks like exactly the same sort of mental machination.
