When I was a sophomore in a Catholic high school during the LBJ years, my history teacher assigned every student to take out a subscription to a weekly news magazine like TIme or Newsweek… but not US News and World Report, because it was “too Republican.”

A half century later, this man’s accurate assessment of the crypto-politics of Time and Newsweek, and its eventual unintended consequences, still tickles the hell out of me.

Likewise US News & World Report was once reliably conservative. Now it is as leftist as Newsweek and Time. The bright side to this is that these print publications are dying like the dinosaurs. They can hardly give subscriptions away, and most have not made a graceful transition to electronic media. (When was the last time you visited time.com?) You rarely even see them in a doctor's waiting room anymore. Since their politics are now identical to WaPo, NYT, and others who spew leftist hate, it is actually pleasurable to watch the death throes of these formerly reliable news sources.
