There may be something to the Daphnia study.

The folk remedy for Ichthyophthirius multifiliis in aquariums, back when pennies were almost pure copper, was to drop a couple of pennies in the tank and take them out when the snails (and the Ichthyophthirius parasites) started dying, before the fish started dying from the copper.

I was unaware that zinc was poisonous to water breathing creatures. Guess what sacrificial anodes on boats are made of?
