Everything changes, so my observation of the situation in the 1970's may no longer be relevant, but here goes anyway. In the years I spent at the University of Florida, and I believe the state of affairs there were representative of American higher education in general, the three easiest degrees to earn were, in no particular order:
1. Elementary Education
2. Physical Education
3. Journalism.
Which leads directly to things like a reporter asking the spokesperson from the National Hurricane Center if it is OK to flush your toilet with non potable water, or like another reporter asking if an asteroid making an unusually close pass by the earth was caused by global warming.
And yes, both of those actually happened.
