My dad was a USMC rifleman during the battle for Okinawa, and after the surrender was sent to Tientsin, China to disarm the Japanese. They were also trying to keep the Chinese and Japanese apart, and keep all of the various factions separated and at peace. He was trained in riot control, and had to do it a few times. The front lines of a rioting crowd do not like massed bayonets. And if ordered to shoot to disperse the rioters, shoot at the street in front of them. All kinds of rocks and ricochets will skim along the ground, usually about knee height. Very discouraging to rioters.
