We're the Only Ones Doing the Work of Others Enough

The shooting happened on Sunday near 43rd Avenue and Union Hills Drive around 7:45 p.m. after someone called 911 about a man armed with a knife threatening to kill people in the Asiana Market. [More]
In "no permit required" Arizona?  What the hell is wrong with the other customers?

I don't understand the criticism. It looks like this guy wanted somebody to call a cop so he could suicide by cop. The cop who came wasn't at any disadvantage, was equipped and ready to take him out, and was trying hard to make that her absolute last resort. In a situation like that, I'd let her do her job, if only because I don't draw a paycheck to do it.

You don't understand the criticism of people whose lives are being threatened who by choice are unable to defend themselves in a state where anyone who is not "prohibited" can, and instead of doing so when seconds count, relying on a minutes away response? So an obviously crazy guy in the market pulls a knife and threatens to kill customers and you wouldn't pull out your gun in preparation for an attack? Your instinct that he really just wants you to call a cop to execute him is reliable enough to trust your and others' lives to?

I don't understand you not understanding.

I misunderstood your criticism as "why didn't anybody come to the assistance of the cop." I didn't have an "instinct" that he wanted to suicide, I got that from reading the after-report of his verbal interactions with the cop.

All I can surmise is that this "Asian foods supermarket" in dark-blue suburban Glendale attracts a clientele largely from the non-self-reliant class, same as Gabby Giffords' disastrous 2011 rally did. Neither of these surprises me much. I'm still much more astounded about what happened at the El Paso Walmart.
