Yes, but while Salon clearly intends a Trump/flyover whites comparison, the analogy works better with the left ginning up racial resentments.

That said, "Designate people as a joke for long enough and eventually they'll make it their mission to turn their oppressors into a punchline" does seem applicable.

Flaws aside, I consider The Expanse the best SciFi show out there, and one of the best shows. The thing I find most unbelievable about it is the UN presiding over a planetary society capable of such technical advances, as innovation is ever a byproduct of personal incentive-based freedom, with repressive regimes more generally relying on stolen technology and imitation. But then again, Star Trek had its United Federation of Planets...

Hollywood politics aside, I always assumed that the UN angle in The Expanse was mainly because it was necessary in order to rationally fashion the story line as "Earth vs. Mars vs. Belters."
