Decades ago, a man on an intercity bus convinced an elderly woman that all the banks in Western NC were going to close the next day. As he was an FBI agent (not true) he could be trusted, and offered to "keep" her money for her. They went to the bank, she withdrew all she had and handed him $80K in cash, at a time when that could buy a nice house in a gated community. He was never seen again, and the real FBI was searching for him, but they had little to go on.
As heinous as that crime was, I believe this is worse, and not just because of the greater amount. It is a betrayal of public trust. If the allegations are true, I hope this creep never sees daylight again.
This con sure picked a deep pockets mark.
