To an old man "life in prison" isn't much of a deterrent. He probably invested his life's savings into rental property to have an income in old age. The "eviction moratorium" likely means his property is being foreclosed on and he will be left a pauper. Now at least he will have three hots and a cot instead of being made homeless and eating out of dumpsters. Expect more events like this. When people have nothing left to lose they have no reason to abstain from violence.
