A Distinction without Much Difference

“You can pull the hammer back without actually pulling the trigger and without actually locking it,” Carmack-Altwies said. “So you pull it back partway, it doesn’t lock, and then if you let it go, the firing pin can hit the primer of the bullet” ... “I would never point a gun at anyone and pull the trigger at them, never,” the former “30 Rock” star said. In an interview, Baldwin said he thumbed the hammer back as far as he could without locking it.
(“I pulled the hammer as far back as I could without cocking the actual gun… [asking her if this is what she wanted to see]… then I let go of the hammer and BANG.”)
If he had pulled it past half-cock, and had his finger off the trigger as he claims, it would have halted at half-cock. If half-cock was too broken to work, it was also too broken for the armorer to load the gun.
