How does a society with no "government" protect itself from invaders? I'm given the example of tenth to thirteenth century Iceland.

My read on that: we're talking a non-technological society that most of the world at the time didn't even know about, let alone have the means or the incentive to invade. It was a homogeneous culture--the same language, tradition, religion, mores, culture, history...

Let's examine the time and conditions in which we live.

I don't expect to resolve the anarchist/libertarianist vs. Constitutionalist debate here. I just wanted to make this dialog available for readers here to engage in.

A Flat-Out Stupid Idea

A detailed proposal to redress the imbalance between state and federal power. [More]

A profoundly dangerous and naive idea--any proposal is subject to political maneuvering and deal-making--witness the ongoing credit card/guns in parks bill. This would be no different, and a constitutional convention could leave us in considerably worse shape than we are now.

Besides which, this presupposes the fault lies within the Constitution--rather than with usurping "lawmakers" who ignore clear proscriptions and do what they want because they can get away with it. This bill would be no different.

You want to fix the Commerce Clause? We know what the founding intent was--follow it. Don't want foreign law? Where is the clause in the existing Constitution that allows it to even enter the equation?

He's trying to fix something that ain't broken.

I like how those who view this as an exercise in academia and political pragmatism think they can deal with corrupt statists and if they just somehow find the right incantation, all will be respected and put right.

The only way to convince a criminal not to press on with an attack is to make him fear the consequences. I see nothing for political predators to fear in this academic wish list.

I'd say it's up to them to address this to the gun-buying public. If they choose not to, the consequences will be theirs to live with.

As this request was backed by some Gentlemen of distinction I conceived it to be my Duty to indulge them with Time to present their Petition and have suspended his Executiong to the 12th of June next. In one such letter, a Sheriff's Department captain complained that MTA Officer Miguel De La Cruz had attacked a "near comatose and intoxicated" man without provocation at a downtown subway station. Bottom line: If the cops can do this to him, they can do this to you. And you'd better believe there are plenty who would cheer on the abuse of a gun owner just as loudly as some would cheer on the abuse of a gangster.

The Childrens' Crusade

Ten minutes into arrant mayhem in this town near the Mexican border, and the gunman, a disgruntled Iraq war veteran, has already taken out two people, one slumped in his desk, the other covered in blood on the floor. [More]

Right. The Mexican border is so devoid of any real threats we need to conjure up a stereotyped slander against veterans.

Funny thing is, sources I've checked say CA law does not address Airsoft guns, so they use US code. But the funnier thing is, CA law says an "imitation firearm" is:

any BB device, toy gun, replica of a firearm, or other device that is so substantially similar in coloration and overall appearance to an existing firearm as to lead a reasonable person to perceive that the device is a firearm.

We're then told:

No person may openly display or expose any imitation firearm, as defined in Section 12550, in a public place...

Merely having an orange tip as provided in federal law and regulations does not satisfy this requirement. The entire surface must be colored or transparent or translucent.

I'm note there's an "out" for "civic activities" to allow the proto-"Only Ones" to shoot imaginary veterans to their hearts' content while their less privileged and immune contemporaries would probably draw a SWAT team that would later claim the shots they fired in response complied with department use of force policy...

U.S. 'Gun Control' Not the Answer to Mexican Crime

We've been off-and-on discussing violent Mexican drug-related crime and the opportunistic plotters in this country trying to exploit it by enacting further citizen disarmament edicts. My last column on this topic includes links to the various decepetions they've been trying.

Information I have received from reliable sources says the Zeta criminal organization is stepping up its ruthlessness on our side of the border. Mules who if detected would previously abandon contraband they were smuggling, must now, under threat of death for failure, protect the drug shipments they are carrying rather than abandon them. To do this, they have been ordered to carry weapons.

And when the Zetas give an order, they expect to be obeyed. [More]

Today's Gun Rights Examiner column shows the absurdity of thinking otherwise. Like keeping you and me from buying semi-autos will have any effect on ruthless, decapitating monsters who can buy the "authorities" on both sides of the border. This whole business of an "assault weapons" ban being needed to fight the cartels is such an utter fraud, what must it say about the motives of anyone proposing it?

But what can we do about it? If we don't obey their strong-arm extortion demands and surrender the fruits of our labors and the time from our lives, they'll dispatch armed teams to kidnap or kill us. If we resist such assaults, initiated on their terms, and at the times and places of their choosing, we and those we love are likely to be exterminated.

And their propagandists will paint us as the terrorist extremists. They'll probably even get a quote from a relieved neighbor or two who had no idea they were living next door to someone with an...an arsenal...and that old "Authorized Journalist" standby, "thousands of rounds of ammunition."

Which may explain the naked contempt the rulers have for us, and why they dare treat so cavalierly that which they wrest from us at gunpoint.
