This Day in History: June 7

The Battle of Connecticut Farms, fought June 7, 1780, was one of the last major battles between British and American forces in the northern colonies during the American Revolutionary War. Hessian General Wilhelm von Knyphausen, in command of the British garrison at New York City, made an attempt to reach the principal Continental Army encampment at Morristown, New Jersey. Knyphausen's advance was strongly met by companies of the New Jersey militia at Connecticut Farms (present-day Union Township). After stiff resistance, the militia were forced to withdraw, but the battle and skirmishing that preceded it sufficiently delayed Knyphausen's advance that he remained there for the night. After realizing that further advance on Morristown would probably be met by even more resistance, Knyphausen withdrew back toward New York. [More]

Gun Owner Opposition to NRA-Backed SB1034 Compromise

Kurt wrote about the bill here.  I was asked to but did not have time to do the requisite research--I still haven't. But I do note there is some strongly-felt opposition from within the gun owner community, and, as their voice is not a loudly or widely heard, am going to paste an email I received on this below for reader consideration:

During the last minute secession that saw the NRA compromise on an amendment too SB1034, State Representative Mike Bost threw an absolute fit on the House floor because he said they didn’t have time to consider and ponder over the legislation sent to them. (video link below it’s 1.33 minutes long, a must see) 

The bad part is even with the claim that the Illinois House didn’t have time to consider and ponder over legislation the House still passed SB1034 because the NRA told them too! Now thanks to this list minute deal the “NO FLY LIST, TERROR WATCH LIST and VETERANS DISARMAMENT LIST” can be added to the FOID data base. PLUS the amendment will allow for a massive up-grade too the data base the runs the current outdated FOID card system. 

Attorney General Eric Holder wanted the up-grades and the NRA capitulated. Apparently the NRA is happy with the gun control requirements of the Illinois FOID card. The Bill is BAD and it was made at the last minute without any regards to the people their property or their lives! We don’t need the FOID card in Illinois so why did the NRA/ISRA save it again? 

We still have a chance to stop this bill by having the governor to veto the bill.

I've been told Lamar Smith said Holder will be there and he'd better be prepared to answer questions, and am trying to track that down to confirm A, he said that, B, Holder will be, and C, they'll be prepared to do more than utter meaningless threats that they're really, really, REALLY gonna do something if he doesn't shape up and play ball soon, by golly, we're SERIOUS this time...don't MAKE us pull over...

This Day in History: May 31

On the western side of the Catawba River, Capt. John McClure collected a party of thirty-two volunteers and on May 31 attacked a group of Loyalists gathering to take British protection at Alexander's Old Field, in present Chester County. 

Although the Loyalists, led by a Colonel Houseman, numbered about two hundred, they were defeated and dispersed by the small Patriot force. This was the first Patriot victory after the fall of Charleston, and the beginning of a great wave of backcountry resistance to the British and their Loyalist allies. [More]

The BS-O-Meter is on the Fritz Again

He muffed his statement; the U.S. guns were involved in Mexican crimes, not necessarily drug trafficking. But officials in both governments say U.S. -sourced guns make up a large proportion of guns carried by drug traffickers.

Why, because the Obama and Calderon administrations say so?  Geez, that's some media watchdog keeping an eye on things for us.

Actually, even with their dropping the old lie and admitting that these are guns submitted for tracing, the way this is presented still helps mislead readers into into drawing unwarranted conclusions. There are other factors not mentioned that need to be considered to view things in their proper perspective.

For instance, some of us have documented in the past that guns submitted for tracing account for only a small fraction of total guns seized, and how only about a third of those submitted guns came from U.S. dealers.

And in a report that factors in government sales and non-civilian ordnance, Stratfor concludes:

[T]he 3,480 guns positively traced to the United States equals less than 12 percent of the total arms seized in Mexico in 2008 and less than 48 percent of all those submitted by the Mexican government to the ATF for tracing. This means that almost 90 percent of the guns seized in Mexico in 2008 were not traced back to the United States.

That's hardly "a large proportion."

Yet once again, our anti-gun pal Rep. Moron and his lickspittle camp followers at the Orwellian-named "Politifact" have buried the needle on the old BS-O-Meter.  Maybe all that overload is why they keep breaking the damn thing...
