OK, but just for a moment.  Any more than that will make my head spin. This loopy broad sounds like she actually believes her own line of manipulated statistics BS.  [More]

A few incidents within a smaller population will yield a higher RATE than many incidents within a larger population. And we can further break things down in terms of neighborhoods and demographics and pesky things like legality and...

But if we're going to stick with homicide rates, and if the problem really is the guns, I wonder what we'd find if we sampled what is arguably the most heavily-armed civilian population on the planet...

What We Have Here is a Failure to Communicate

“But yes, that’s the beginning of the semester,” it said. “I’m always optimistic. By October, I’ll be wanting to get up to the top of the bell tower with a high powered rifle — with a good scope, and probably a gatling gun as well.” [More]
I understand that the guy being an instructor and all makes such a post questionable, but this looks like hoplophobia writ large.  I find it hard to believe this is not just hyperbole and dark humor, and could have easily been resolved as such just by talking to the guy.

I mean c'mon, do these people have any idea, first, how expensive it would be to acquire a Gatling gun and then what it would take to haul it to the top of a bell tower?

Yeah, OK, in today's era of everybody in academia being an hysterical wuss with the vapors, I see where posting this on Facebook was poor judgement, but my biggest beef with the guy is that a communications professor should have capitalized the "g" in Gatling.

What we have here seems more than a failure to communicate.  What we have here is a chilling warning on what we can and cannot say on social media.  It seems to me the bigger danger is having the state automatically respond by sending in men with guns, prepared to kill us if we cross an arbitrary threshold between joke and threat.

Organized medicine’s decades-long campaign to have firearm-related fatalities considered as a public health rather than a criminal justice issue is not evidence-based. NSSF continues to urge lawmakers and regulators alike to remember that there is a bipartisan solution advanced by the gun industry — strengthening our current background check system ... WE WON’T STAND FOR SCAPEGOATING
NO NEW GUN LAWS
DENY SUCCESS TO MASS MURDERERS BY ABOLISHING PHONY ‘GUN-FREE’ VICTIM / KILLER ENABLING ZONES NOW
WORK WITH US OR WE WILL WORK TO RETIRE YOU
There has been a "leadership" contingent eager since Day One after Newtown to come up with a sacrificial goat to give to government. We also saw an under-the-bus candidate search by manufacturers who have traditionally been eager to protect their interests and the hell with everyone else's. These are the ones apologists would have us keep quiet about when they urge us that we need to stand together -- as if the divisiveness is coming from the SNBI crowd. I'm sure Fairfax would have caved by now if not for our rude, strident voices...

It's simple. You don't throw a scrap of flesh to circling jackals and think they'll go away. You don't give the enemy a beachhead from which they can launch their next assault deeper into the interior. And while Polyphemus may have promised to eat you last, eat you he most certainly will, particularly after you've served up the ones hardening a sharpened pole in the fire...

And the Crowd Went Wild

Kuzawa expressed his opinion on why guns should be allowed on city property, but Sharon Fairchild-Soucy, vice-president of Council, responded that she did not feel safe in a city that allows guns.

“I want my grandson to grow up in a town where guns are not necessary, and I think I have the right to live in a protected environment where guns are not a factor,” she said to a round of applause. [More]
Oberlin is one of those "progressive" college-dominated towns.  They take pride in being an Underground Railroad stop, and even in being known as"the town that started the Civil War."

There are plenty of photos of a plaque commemorating that, but for some reason it's difficult to find any of its reverse side, that says:
In 1859, Oberlin's African American lawyer and activist, John Mercer Langston recruited two of the town's prominent young men of color, John A. Copeland and Lewis Sheridan Leary into John Brown's band of twenty-one raiders. They attacked the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Leary was killed during the unsuccessful attempt to bring about emancipation through a slave insurrection. Before his hanging in Charleston, Virginia on December 19, 1859, Copeland wrote to his family in Oberlin: "how dear brother could I die for a more noble cause?" Oberlinites memorialized these two martyrs and co-conspirator, Shields Green, with the only monument erected for any of the five African Americans who fought with John Brown. The monument stands in Oberlin's Martin Luther King Park.
I wonder if ol' Sharon would have approved of these ...uh... insurrectionists fighting the violence monopoly for freedom -- with guns.  I suppose I could always ask her -- if I gave a damn about this bleating ungulate's opinion.

Mindset to keep safe taught in ‘Lessons from Unarmed America’

As the title suggests, this is not a book about defensive gun uses. Rather, it’s a series of lessons, and that word is truly appropriate, where Walters relates dangerous situations that actual people found themselves in, leaving Pincus with the task of assessing what could have or should have happened had they made different choices. [More]
This afternoon's Gun Rights Examiner column reviews a book that can help us prepare for some choices we'd rather not be forced to make.

Reese family attorneys may withdraw over compensation issues

Changing that dynamic does not appear likely, due in no small part to a virtual media blackout on the story, with the exception of limited reach niche readership efforts like this column and Tea Party Patriots of Luna County (which has done exceptional work fleshing out the details and back story of the case). Add to that a predisposition of gun owners, at least those who have even heard about this case, to talk about it but not really do much else, especially when it comes to informing their friends and adding a few dollars to the defense fund now and then. [More]

Today’s Gun Rights Examiner report notes we’d all better pray we never need help.

On Nullification

Robert Levy has a NYT op-ed. [More]

Here's the thing about nullification. My friend Russ Howard responded to an article I wrote last month by sending me this observation:
As ______________  recently pointed out to me, our side should stop using "nullified", nullify, nullification, etc, which is clearly a loser with the public, and start using phrases like "fair trial", "righting wrongs", acquitting, clearing, honoring the oath, obeying the highest law of the land, law enforcement, etc. E.g., "Jury Nullification" is a loser. "Fair Trial", use of discretion to right injustice, etc, are winners.

The Sheriff did not "nullify the law". The arrest / prosecution / statutory law would've nullified the Constitution. He obeyed and honored the highest law of the land, and prevented a lesser law or act from nullifying it. He did his job and obeyed The Law. Anything contrary isn't law and doesn't need to be "nullified". He was even preventing illegal activity, ending an illegal arrest, which is his job. Law enforcement.
Of course some would tell us that's not our place to decide -- and that if the composition of the Supreme Court can change enough to shift just one vote, well, turn 'em all in, Mr. and Mrs. America...

Documents point to ATF raid on 'Lanza gun shop' being a staged media event

It’s fair to ask how The Courant was able to produce such a detailed report practically simultaneously to the events without advance information of the ongoing raid. It would appear to be especially relevant as the situation was deemed by professional federal law enforcement to be dangerous enough to send dozens of armed agents and police officers ostensibly into harm’s way, not to mention posing real risks to store employees and any customers who may have been on premises. Today’s Gun Rights Examiner report notes a carefully-planned media event disguised as a law enforcement operation. Funny, isn’t it, how they then turn around and refuse to answer oversight interrogators using the “ongoing investigation” excuse to avoid compliance?

Our Own Worst Enemies

Remember the mental health blanket dragnet?

Nothing like throwing the ones least capable of defending themselves under the Bloomberg bus, as if that will stop it from rolling and the crazed driver won't just aim it at somebody else. (And why does that remind me of the way some regimes have treated "mental defectives"?)

Remember how, in spite of some movement and industry "leaders" urging that we'd have to give up something after Newtown, because congressmen can't just do nothing, some of us instead warned against throwing circling jackals a scrap of flesh and thinking that would make them go away?

Remember how some of us advocated:
WE WON’T STAND FOR SCAPEGOATING
NO NEW GUN LAWS
DENY SUCCESS TO MASS MURDERERS BY ABOLISHING PHONY ‘GUN-FREE’ VICTIM / KILLER ENABLING ZONES NOW
WORK WITH US OR WE WILL WORK TO RETIRE YOU
Yes, thank you to those of you sending me links to this petition. I mentioned it in that January column.

Where it originated hardly surprises me. But that no longer matters, as the church sells indulgences (and just forget who really pays that bill).

What's disturbing is how many in "our ranks" seem not just oblivious to the danger they're inviting, but enthusiastic about embracing it.  Most of them know not what they do, but that doesn't help. We're responsible for our actions, and "I didn't know the wolf would kill" is hardly a sympathetic excuse for opening the door in the first place and letting it in.

To those who counsel we need to stand together: That presupposes some are actually taking a stand, instead of engineering preemptive concessions.

Get on the right side of the damn line and we will.

Mississippi Supreme Court overturns injunction against House Bill 2

“This Court now finds that the Circuit Judge erred as a matter of law when he found House Bill 2 to be vague and, therefore unconstitutional,” the Supreme Court found. “He also erred when he stated that ‘a reasonable person reading the bill could not discern what the law allows and what it prohibits.’" [More]
This evening’s Gun Rights Examiner brings some happy news from the Magnolia State, where an anti-gun judicial activist has not only been overturned, he’s been exposed for all the world to see as an agenda-driven incompetent.

Today's Gun Rights Examiner report notes a rule change.  Don't think of it as a penalty enhancement, think of it as a way to further cut off sources.

And Laugh They Did...

Seems no sooner did gun owners get a reason to celebrate when the antis threw up an illegal roadblock.

Grassroots North Carolina tells us about the latest "official" outrage, where the Macon County School board is considering an unlawful gun ban, and what we can do about it.

This is totally me talking, and I hope it doesn't make GRNC wince: Do you realize how lucky you are to have leaders of the caliber of Paul Valone and his colleagues, who take point on this stuff with awareness, energy, knowledge and commitment? If you're a North Carolina gun owner who benefits from their advocacy, and if you don't share this latest alert, take a moment to do what they ask, and then kick a bit into the kitty to help supply the front line troops doing the fighting, how is that any different from being, say, a welfare parasite?

A Great Democracy Does Not Make it Harder to Vote than to Buy an Assault Weapon?

I beg to differ. Sure it does. [More]

But it depends on what the meaning of the term "great democracy" is.

Some of us note subtle differences between mob rule and a system where individual rights are unalienable no matter how many raving collectivists covet them.

Some of us aren't sympathetic to disarming at the demand of the former Gun Nut in Chief, particularly since you now aspire to be First Philanderer.
