Gillibrand Apologists Cling to Hope

The apologists are tripping all over themselves to convince either us (or themselves?) that Kirsten Gillibrand's "evolution" on guns is all part of some pragmatic master political plan.

The newest hope they're clinging to:

She keeps two rifles under her bed.

"If I want to protect my family, if I want to have a weapon in the home, that should be my right."

Well, then, no need for concern. We can all go back to sleep now. I mean, if she owns guns, she must be one of us. Right Lon Horiuchi and Ray Schoenke?

But wait--there's a new development:

A spokesman says the rifles are not loaded...

So you're going to protect your family by using them as clubs...?

Ah... situation resolved:

If she won't defend her own right to keep and bear arms, what type of wishful thinking makes anybody think she'll defend theirs?

UPDATE: Keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better. You might even convince yourself her Tiahrt reversal is smart politics.

That makes one a "realist"? Cool, we can all relax now. Besides, Jacob has met her in person.

I like that "perfect is the enemy of the good" platitude almost as much as "Politics is the art of the possible," as if people who discourage envelope pushing know where the boundaries of possibility lie.

The Turning of Kirsten Gillibrand

My reports on the "evolution" of "pro-gun" Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's public position on guns have struck a nerve in some quarters of the gun rights community. Accusations have included I forget this is New York we're talking about, that I am damning her with quotes of others, that, as usual, I don't know what I'm talking about, and my favorite--and this one is from an officer with a state gun rights group--that I engage in...uh...something I can't repeat here with my "fan boys" while watching "Red Dawn."

Sen. Gillibrand's Latest Talking Point About The NRA Is Completely False [More]

It would be hard to find someone with more contempt for her than me, but the claim that "NRA is largely funded by the gun manufacturers" should be evident to anyone who has ever looked through one of their magazines and seen all the ads.  In a few weeks members will be going to a convention where the industry has spent a fortune renting booths.

Add to that the Round-Up program, endowments, corporate sponsorships and the like -- here's just one example.

That doesn't invalidate the "five million members" claim (although I'd like to see that substantiated) or say that those members don't provide substantial funding themselves -- but that's not the claim being made here, is it?

The "completely false" assertion misinforms. And it does so in a way that transitions what Gillibrand claims into something she did not.

He voted for the initial law banning guns and ammunition for domestic abusers in 2015...Buehler listed several other gun safety regulations he would support. “I’m certainly for common sense gun legislation, such as banning bump stocks, restricting those under 21 from not buying assault weapons and a three-day waiting period on hand gun purchases,” he said. “Those kinds of laws would make a difference, and have in other places, to decrease gun related violence.”

He added that he differed with the Trump administration on several immigration policies. He said he backed protections for immigrants brought here illegally as children, and opposed the administration’s policy of separating children from parents seeking to cross the border.

Thank goodness this has nothing to do with that "single issue"!

The guy who donated big money (he's in the "between $10K - $25K category) to the Clinton Foundation, which promotes, among other things, a glowing eulogy for Sarah Brady, advice from Mark Kelly and Gabby Giffords to graduating students to "make our communities safer from gun violence," and a boast about how the [Bill] Clinton Administration made "communities safer [through] commonsense gun laws"?

The guy who rolled over for Obama's executive actions on guns despite a clear duty to defend state interests?

The guy who remains intentionally off the record on the Norquist/Bloomberg Amnesty Alliance? Thank goodness that -- aside from guaranteeing a "pathway to citizenship" Democrat supermajority allowing legislatures to pass whatever gun edicts they like and assuring friendly court appointments to uphold them -- this has nothing at all to do with that "single issue."  Right, Messrs. LaPierre and Cox?

Oh, but he's on our side! He saw which way the political winds were blowing and backed a "right to bear arms amendment" (after voters showed what they expected)!  He'd never betray us if political circumstances created different opportunities, like, say, Kirsten Gillibrand and Harry Reid (and plenty more I could name) did, would he?  Those were just flukes when NRA allowed its members to be used and discarded, right?

Besides, the Republican he's running against, former SEAL and Purple Heart/Bronze Star recipient Eric Greitens must be a gunsquish RINO, right?

Ummm... no. No. And no.

So what kind of game is the Vulcan chessmaster playing here?

One thing you can be sure of: It will rely heavily on pawns.
