If this guy had a revolver with a loaded chamber under the hammer and no transfer bar safety he SHOULD HAVE KNOWN that that weapon must be secured properly, not thrown in a pocket, as was apparently the case.
If he chose "pocket carry" the gun should be suited for it, meaning a DAO hammerless model that will not shoot unless the trigger is squeezed.

In answer to your question, if a revolver is a model where the firing pin is on the hammer and the hammer is over a live round a blow to the hammer "can" cause the round to be fired without squeezing the trigger.
That is why many people prefer to not carry a live round in the cylinder under the hammer on such a gun.
If you want to "carry 6" then an option is to choose a model that employs a transfer bar. A transfer bar is in between the hammer and the firing pin, when the trigger is pulled the transfer bar "transfers" the force of the falling hammer to the firing pin thereby discharging the weapon. If the hammer falls without the trigger being squeezed the hammer cannot contact the firing pin and the weapon will not fire.
Another option is to choose a double action only DAO revolver on which the hammer is shrouded or internal. Such a gun cannot fire unless the trigger is squeezed.
Ruger has such a transfer bar in its revolvers, and they offer to retrofit their older guns with it.
