You could try WWII or the Old West. Just as interesting in my opinion, and just as important in many instances.
The Library of Congress has a "Today in History" page. http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/today/today.html -- if you look at the "yesterday" link, you'll see the format for a permalink to any day.
Another place to search for historical data would be
http://www.libraryspot.com/ -- it's an index of sorts. Don't see "History" as a general category, but you might find something poking around.
