In an interview, Mr. Ortiz, the police chief, applauded Mr. Greer and others in Edgewood, saying their actions had spurred other areas to initiate neighborhood watches. And he said major criminal activity in the neighborhood had quieted since June.
But he said he did not support their carrying weapons.
Because, as we've proven time and again, only "The Only Ones" are competent enough to do that...

After reading of this yesterday I sent Mayor DeStefano (he of the ("Recipe for Disaster") the following email under the subject line:I know you are not stupid

Therefore I must assume you are immoral. I have been reading of the citizens' patrol in one of your neigborhoods and the decrease in crime it has engendered. I have also read your bleatings of presumed future tragedy.
It is not tragedy to stop a violent criminal. In fact, it is more moral to cause the thugs to eschew (look it up) their predatory instincts than it is to encourage them by reducing police patrols until something is done which must be addressed with violent and often fatal consequences.
If fatal consequence is inevitable due to the intransigence of certain miscreants then it is still moral to visit the fatality upon him, rather than allow him to visit same upon an innocent.
With a name like DeStefano I am assuming you are of Italian descent and most probably a Catholic, but almost certainly a Christian. While I am not a particularly religious man, I find it unfathomable that so-called "peace advocates" deride defense of God's most precious gift, LIFE.
If one is not religious and believes that we are all an accident of chemical and organic combinations never to happen again and nothing awaits us after this life, then it is sheer stupidity to not recognize just how much more precious such circumstance makes our individual lives. No decent man would or could find fault with the protection of innocent life.
So, that begs the question, "Are you a decent man?" or "Do you simply need a monopoly of force for reasons you dare not speak?"
