A Reason for Optimism?

Leading presidential candidates for the November 2008 U.S. election issued statements expressing sorrow and support for the victims. None called for tighter gun laws, which are traditionally left to state and local authorities.

Well, the day ain't over, but that is a good sign...

Think how much better it would be if most gun owners were actually informed and engaged.

"There is the mythology advanced by the gun lobby of the Wild West and the individual frontiersman single-handedly holding off the British and the Indians and the bears simultaneously," said Helmke.

In response to the puerile sneers of the blood-dancing fascists, I point to:

LA riots: Only the store owners with Ruger Mini-14's standing on their roofs did NOT get looted and burned out.

Post-Katrina New Orleans: Only people with guns prevented car theft, looting, rape, and murder in their neighborhoods.

Post-Earthquake California, near SF: Two looters shot near the epicenter of the Loma Prieta quake sent looters fleeing from an entire town.

Post-hurricane Florida: People standing guard in their front yards with prominently displayed weapons prevented looters from ravaging whole neighborhoods.

Poor Paul Helmke. Reality sure does have a way of catching up to him.
