It Went Off

He raised his gun. He prepared to fire. And ...

BLAM.

Somehow, Emmons' gun went off...

"It accidentally went off, that's pretty much it," Emmons said...

"As I was starting to get on the trigger, the gun just went off," he said.
Maybe it was nervous?

At least in this case, he was aiming in the direction of a target and preparing to fire.

Keep your finger off the trigger, and it won't "accidentally" go off.

Choked. That is all he did. He choked.

Hard to feel sorry for a dude that is married to a SMOKING hot Czech olympic shooter.

I know how it went off...his booger hook was on the trigger.

You know, I'm not an Olympic-level shooter, but I usually don't put my finger on the trigger until I'm lined up on the center of the target. Then I make my fine adjustments before actually pulling the trigger (because moving my finger disturbs my alignment slightly).

I have had a similar situation happen before, but it was my first shot ever with a brand new muzzle-loader, and I had decided to use the set trigger. I missed the target completely! The second shot, without the set trigger, was a bullseye (I love that rifle!).

But here's the thing: I didn't know that gun. An Olympic shooter, at the Olympics, should know the gun he's using. This is a poor excuse - he choked.

Once, a muzzleloader I own did "go off" on its own as I cocked it with my finger nowhere near the trigger. A piece of wood inside the stock had come off and lodged inside the lock, preventing the sear from catching. Had I not had the gun pointed down-range as I cocked it, tragedy could have ensued. But, how many of these cases involve a real mechanical problem of this sort?

Too much adrenaline, not enough control of his finger. BANG

This guy is many, many orders of magnitude better than I will ever even hope to be.

But from my tiny little bit of experience in competition, I know how easy it is to lose focus for just an instant, and pull the shot.

He still gets enormous respect from me, even if he did muff his trigger control.

He was caressing his gun too much...
